Typically, geographic information is represented visually (as markers, lines, etc.) on a map. Sometimes it is also represented through infographics and charts (as when comparing mountain heights, or lake areas, etc. When geographic information needs to be transported from one place / medium to another, however, it needs to be converted to a data format that can be later "read" by the receiving place / medium in order to be presented.
A common example is when you recorded your trip on your motorcycle's GPS or on your phone using a GPS app like Gaia or Strava and now you'd like to "export" that trip to see it on a map on your computer, learn what was your average speed, see how long you spent moving, etc. Any self-respected app or GPS out there will have the option for you to export your trip into a few portable data formats. Some common formats are GPX (by OpenStreetMap), KML (by Google) and GeoJSON (free and open source).
We have created this page to help our fellow motorcyclists upload their trip data and see the important information about their trips, and have chosen the GeoJSON data format since it is not connected to any private companies.
All you have to do is export your recorded trip from your GPS device or phone App into a file in GeoJSON format. Download that file to a computer (or send it to yourself via email) and upload it below. The details of your trip and other useful features will then be displayed on a map.
